Recent Successes in TBC Sport
Squash
The NZSS Championships were just completed at the Devoy Squash Centre in Tauranga which is located on our Hostel Block. After placing second in 2011 the team went one better to claim the national title for the first time. Victory was achieved with a 3-2 win over last year’s champions Christchurch BHS with Alex Oakley named in the New Zealand team.
Surfing
Earlier in the month our 8 man team competed in the Nationals at Raglan. After 3 days of intensive competition this team also emerged as national champs for the first time.
Super 8
TBC hosted both Basketball & Hockey competitions earlier in the month as part of the lead up to their respective national competitions. The basketball team placed third after losses to New Plymouth who were the eventual winners and Hastings BHS. The hockey side went one better but ended up losing the final of their competition to Hamilton BHS 2-3 after very good wins against Napier & Palmerston North BHS who are both at Rankin Cup & New Plymouth BHS in the semi-final.
Water Polo
Matt Hansen & Cameron Hayes have been selected in the NZ Under 18 team to compete in Australia later in the year.
Lawn Bowls
Talor Duncan has been selected in the New Zealand Development Squad.
Indoor Cricket
John Coulter has been selected in the New Zealand Under 14 team to compete in the World Cup in South Africa.

Music
The TBC Band has just returned from Wellington where they competed in the New Zealand School of Music Jazz Festival. The performances were impressive as Kelly Ballard came back with awards for the Most Oustanding Percussionist as well asBest Original Arrangement while Daniel Kalasingham was awarded Most Outstanding Bass Player. These two along withEric Bagley combined with 2 TGC pupils in the T Jazz Collective which took out the award as the Most Outstanding Combo.
Old Boys Sport
Olympics
All of our 7 Olympians have attained positions in the top 16 in the world in respective competitions in London. Single sculler Mahe Drysdale achieved his golden dream after the disappointment of Beijing while Peter Burling and his crew Blair Tuke brought home silver in the exciting 49ers sailing. It was great to welcome Peter back to school on Monday with his silver medal.

Old Boys Events
Auckland Function
A delegation from TBC travelled to Auckland last week to host our annual meeting there which was held at the Brewery Bar, near Britomart. Development manager Scott Wikohika, Assistant Principals Wayne Merritt & Neil Howard and Old Boy Executive’s Rawiri Walker and Simon Oldham and myself all enjoyed mixing and mingling with Auckland Old Boys. There was a great turnout from 92 year old ex-staff member Gunter Warner to a couple of our recent 20 year old Gillette Cup cricketers in Daniel Abricossow and Dane Sorrenson.
Sports Day
The Sports Day and Dinner are rapidly approaching on Friday, September 14th – the highlight of our Old Boys year.
Sign up for the sports of rugby, hockey, football, basketball and volleyball on the website at tbcoba.org.nz –matches begin at 3 p.m. There will be refreshments in Mayfield House afterwards.
Annual Dinner
Some tickets are still available but they are selling fast. Go here to purchase tickets. This year we are limiting it to the first 200 tickets sold and there are discounts for members of the Old Boys' Associaiton. The dinner is a bit more formal this year and partners are welcome to come along.
This year we will recognize Bryan Gould as our Old Boy of the Year. Bryan was our first Rhodes Scholar at Oxford from 1962. He studied law but then taught and worked as a television journalist as well as serving as a British Member of Parliament for 16 years. This included time as a member of Neil Kinnock’s Shadow Cabinet. Bryan returned to New Zealand and became Vice Chancellor of Waikato University and has also been awarded Companionship of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Education.
Guest Speaker is Jeremy Redmore - the lead singer of Midnight Youth - who has an interesting tale to tell from singing Jazz with the TBC Big Band to being named in the Group of the year in the New Zealand Music Awards in 2009. Hopefully, with a bit of encouragement, we will be able to get him to sing a song or two.
