TBC Old Boys' Update #1 2013
A Happy New Year to You all. The 2013 school year is now well under way and there is plenty to report on. At the end of last year there was less movement of staff than I have known for a number of years however during the holidays Hamish Forbes left for his old school Palmerston North BHS while Steve Graham (Old Boy from the 1960's) left to teach in Rarotonga. Old Boy Steven Kelly (1993-97) has returned from Thailand to join the PE Department again.
Exam results have just all come out with our NCEA results being the best ever. Our Scholarship results were again much better than all of the other BOP schools with 37, 4 of which were Outstanding. In total 24 students gained Scholarships across 12 different subject areas. Year 12 student Todd Harris got 3 Scholarships while 2 others at that level got 2 each.
Last years Head Prefect Hautapu Baker was awarded a $5000 Westpac Scholarship for study at Auckland University.
Old Boys Events
The TBC Old Boys Committee has had its first meeting of 2013 and has settled on the following dates for a series of events for the year. Please take note of these now and put them in your diary so that you are able to get along when the time comes. Further details will follow in future newsletters and also on the website www.tbcoba.org.nz
April 26th - London Function - Principal Robert Mangan will again host a gathering of Old Boys & Staff at the Bar in London. This continues on from successful previous occasions in 2010 and 2011 where Old Boy Shane Killingback hosted the group in one of his bars. The venue is the No.1 Sports Bar, City Road - nearest Tube is Old Street. Please spread the word & get along from 6.30 p.m.
May 4th - TBC host Auckland Grammar at 12 noon - come along and support the 1st XV in what should be a very good season.
May 18th-19th - Tauranga College hosts a reunion of pupils from the Coed years of 1946-57. If you would like more information contact Gary Ware on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

July 6th - Enjoy drinks and good company in the TBC Staffroom before heading across to the Graham Young Youth Theatre to see this year's school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
July 9th - Our annual Old Boys meeting in Auckland which coincides with the Westlake BHS winter fixtures the following day.
September 13th - Annual Sports Day & Dinner @ TBC with Old Boy of the Year honoured. Put this date in your diary now to avoid disappointment.
December 3rd - The last 2 years we have had an Old Boys get together in the capital and this is when it will happen again in 2013.
Our Old Boys President Bill Holland has been awarded a Research Scholarship from the City University of New York which will allow him to investigate the best way to set up a National Association for Community Trusts. Bill has been instrumental in establishing the highly successful Acorn Foundation in Tauranga.
Further details about all of these events will follow in later newsletters & will be available on the website. Please spread the word to as many of your mates to get them along to support the College and Old Boys Committee who have put together this range of events for you to enjoy.
Staff News
Garth Sim (Principal from 1959-66 ) still lives in the same house in Edgecumbe Road where he lived when he retired. Garth had his 98th birthday in November and is still sharp of mind, but not as mobile as he would like !! He and Nen celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary last month.
Norm Morris (Principal from 1971 -85) remarried in 2012. Wife Shirley had passed away from cancer a number of years ago.
Graham Young (Principal from 1985 to 2009) has continued to work in a number of capacities since he left TBC with his main work at present being with the Aspiring Principals Association, under contract to the Waikato University.
Gary Bowler (Deputy Principal from 1985 -88) left to be Principal at Nelson College but has lived near Coromandel for more than a decade now where, until recently, he & Gail ran the Jacaranda Lodge Bed & Breakfast.
Old Boys Sport
Cricket - Bay of Plenty challenged for the Hawke Cup (symbol of Minor Association supremacy) last month and crushed Hamilton , in the process breaking a number of records. Joe Carter scored a record 187 before that record was broken by Brett Hampton just a couple of hours later with 194 in a record score of 700. Since then there have been 2 successful challenges with the last being against Canterbury Country with 10 of those 11 players being Old Boys. The new century has been a very good time for TBC cricket & the following have all represented the Bay - Joe Carter, Ben Christensen, Tommy Clout, Sean Davey, Matthew Drake, Peter Drysdale, Daniel Flynn, Matt Golding, Brett Hampton, Daniel Hill, Brian Jurisich, Tevita Levao, Tom MacRury, Mitch McCann, Alex Oakley, Bharat Popli, Steven Rae, Richard Rice, Amandeep Singh, Dane Sorrenson, Scott Steward, Dale Swan, Campbell Thomas & Kane Williamson.
This season Bharat Popli has become the BOP player to score most centuries for the province with 6. Bharat & Joe Carter both played for Northern Districts A at the annual tournament at Lincoln.
Coast to Coast Rower Mahe Drysdale has announced that he will look to compete at the Rio Olympics but in the meantime has opted out of training for 6 months. He has just completed the Coast to Coast and this weekend is competing in the ProAm section of the NZPGA Golf Tournament. Other Old Boys to complete the Coast to Coast this year were Paul Rutherford and Vaughan Roper. As well as these events Mahe had time in his hectic schedule to pick up the NZ Sportsman of the Year award. Congratulations!
Hockey - Andy Hayward got a late call-up to join the Hockey India League last month and his team the Delhi WaveRiders made the final where they played the Ranchi Rhinos. They were favourites to win the title but in a tight contest lost 1-2.
Rugby - The new Super 15 rugby season is underway & we have a number of our Old Boys performing at this level again. Luke Braid's season with Auckland has started well with 2 excellent wins. Flankers Tanerau Latimer & Sam Kane are both back with the Chiefs while Jarrad Hoeata is down South at the Highlanders again.
Basketball - Richard Clarke is the NZ Breakers CEO. The team are well on the way to a 3-peat of their Australian Basketball League Championship.
Netball - Yes this is not a misprint !! Tim Hamilton, who had his Form 6 year at TBC in 1986, is back “home” in his new role as CEO of the BOP Magic netball franchise. In the past he has been CEO of NZ basketball, worked for North Harbour netball,
Sailing - London silver medallist Peter Burling has been involved in a wide range of sailing experiences since the Olympics. Peter took out the Australian Foiling Moth nationals in a fleet that included 3 Aussie gold Medallists. He was reunited with Blair Tuke again in the 49er in the Sail Auckland regatta just before Waitangi Day where they won 10 out of 11 races. They are now in Oman in the Extreme 40 catamaran sailing circuit sailing for Team Korea.
There has been a 7 strong New Zealand team selected to contest the inaugural Red Bull Youth America's Cup which will be held in San Francisco in September. Three of those selected are from TBC with Peter Burling the skipper joined by fellow Olympian Jason Saunders and also Sam Meech.
Golf - Jared Pender has just completed a 12-under par total at the New Zealand PGA golf tournament in Queenstown which was enough for a tie for 8th.
BayTrust Scholarships Several Old Boys have had their performances recognized with monetary support which should mean further success. Marshall Gibson ( wrestling), Sam Shergold (surf life saving) & Jay Carter (golf coaching).
Old Boys Arts
Honorary Doctorate - The Waikato University has awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Old Boy Richard O'Brien for his contribution to the Arts. Richard wrote the classic Rocky Horror Picture Show in the 70's.
Music - Former Midnight Youth lead singer Jeremy Redmore has a single ready for release that will likely happen next month. He hopes to have his first solo album out before the end of 2013.
Television Shows - Ian Mune (2011 Old Boy of the Year) is back on the small screen on the Agent Anna show where he plays the father of the show's star Tauranga's Robyn Malcolm Her father Peter was Principal of Otumoetai College in the 1980's.
Head Prefect from 1986 Erik Thomson is back as Dave Rafter in the Packed to the Rafters comedy while Regan Lethbridge (member of the Melbourne-based band Bonjah) has featured as a musician in another comedy Winners and Losers.
Art - Nigel Brown has helped the Tauranga Gallery celebrate its 5th birthday with a gift of a further 40 of his works. The Gallery already has a significant body of Nigel's work who was taught at the school by Fred Graham in the 1960's.
TBC Sport
Rowing - The annual Maadi Cup regatta culminates the weekend of March 23rd and our crews are shaping up better than they have for a good number of years. A number of boys are showing great form in the regattas leading up to nationals which this year are being held at Karapiro.
Cricket - The summer sports programme is well under way and the 1st XI has been busy. After a disappointing 7th placing at the Super 8 tournament they have since come back to win 3 out of 4 matches against St Kentigern College and Kelston BHS.
Last year the 1st XI won the inaugural Baywide T20 competition & qualified for this year's final. Things didn't look good when they only managed 93 but they rolled Cadets for just 58 to defend their title. Our Year 10 side has just qualified for Nationals which are to be held in Palmerston North later this term by beating Cambridge HS.
Through the school holidays Tommy Clout & Tom MacRury represented Northern Districts at Under 19 level while Alex Oakley & Henry Conway both represented the Under 18 ND Development team. At Under 16 level Connor Probert made the Northern Districts team.
Beach Volleyball - The first national title of 2013 came at the National Age group beach volleyball champs where Brad Fullerton & Burton McAdam took out the Under 19 section. They defeated another TBC combination in Thomas Reid & Daryl Lewis in the final.
Australian Youth Olympic Festival - We had 3 students competing in Sydney over the holidays. Rowers Daniel Bridgwater and Sheldon Noyce both gained silver medals while Callum Gilbert competed in the kayaking.
Lawn Bowls - The national championships have been held through the holidays and we had 3 students involved at the sharp end of the competition. Talor Duncan defeated the defending champion in his semifinal but was beaten in the final. Nathan Arlidge & Stefan McCartin were also beaten into the silver medal position in the pairs final.
Mountain Biking - TBC has a growing number of cyclists in training and the team headed to Rotorua for Nationals. Best results came from Jack Wilson who placed 4th in the Under 15 division while Harrison Mudgway was 6th in the Under 17 division.
Windsurfing - In the Under 17 event of the Techno Youth Olympics Josh McConnell was placed 3rd.
Water Polo 2013 - Head Prefect Mungo Mason was the youngest member of the NZ Under 20 water polo team that beat several state sides from Australia through the holiday break. Younger students performing well include Sean McKenzie & Sam Pasley who have just undergone trials for the New Zealand Under 15 team.
Athletics - Our annual athletic sports have just been held on the artificial track at Tauranga Domain with entry numbers being superb. Three records were broken with Oliver Ranby winning the Senior 200m. in 22.04s (previously 22.8s held byM Ormsby in 1978, Daniel Hintz winning the Intermediate 800m. in 2 min. 1 sec (previously Scott Croasdale in 2011) & Caleb Aperahama putting 14.52 m. in the Senior shot( previously D. McKay in 1987)
As you see a busy start to the new year. I have been able to host a number of Old Boys from out of town for a look around the school in the past month which is always a pleasure so if you are heading this way & would like to catch up please don't hesitate to contact me.
