TBC Old Boys Update #2 2013

It has been a very busy term and outlined below are a number of the things the school and Old Boys have been involved with …. Check out the upcoming events at the end of the news & get back to me with anything I can add next time.

TBC Sport

Volleyball
Tauranga BC were back again as national champions in 2013 in a sport we have dominated at various times through the years. Last time we held the trophy was 2007. A smooth run through qualifying saw TBC up against Orewa College in the quarter finals - a game which was won 3-1. Next came South Island champions Nelson College in the semi-final and this was wrapped up 3-0 meaning TBC were pitted against reigning champs Western Heights HS in the final. They had a several Year 14s in their number & we had struggled against them in earlier clashes however the team played well throughout and emerged victorious in straight sets. Max Shroder, Caleb Aperahama & Brad Fullerton were all named in the tournament team while Max was player of the tournament. Yes – he is the son of Phil who was a TBC volleyball star in the 80’s.

Rowing
About 120 schools and more than 1500 athletes competed at the Maadi regatta held at Karapiro in tournament week. TBC produced some excellent results as 5th school in sculling & 13th in overall points. Top 10 badges were won by 6 crews in comparison with 3 in 2012. Individual highlights were gold in the U 18 quadruple sculls & U 18 double while the lightweight double won bronze. The Maadi 8 came a creditable 6th.

Kayaking
TBC sent a 28 strong team to Nationals held on the Tarawera River and performed outstandingly to come home with 25 individual & 16 team medals. This was enough for TBC to regain the Top Kayaking school trophy from Dunstan HS who had held it for the previous 2 years. Top performers were Callum Gilbert who won the best paddler at Under 18 level while Patrick Washer claimed the Under 16 title. Callum also contested the NZ Open K1 event in which he claimed silver behind Olympian Mike Dawson. Jack Daangen won the Under 16 Extreme Whitewater Freestyle title.

Tennis
Tennis nationals saw TBC secure a creditable 4th placing for 2013 with the highlight being Number 1 player Nick Brown remaining unbeaten for the second year in a row. The team beat Christs College & Palmerston North BHS but after a count-back loss to Scots College & so were 4th in the country. Victory over PNBHS meant that we were Super 8 champions as well.

Cricket
Playoffs for the Gillette Cup finals were contested in a tournament format over 3 days in Hamilton this year and our XI started superbly with a 105 run win over Gisborne BHS. Highlight of that game was Keaton Taylor’s maiden century for the school with 122. The semi-final saw an even larger winning margin with Mahurangi College beaten by 199 runs. The final saw TBC against Whangarei BHS and unfortunately they were too good for us winning by 5 wickets. Captain Ben Musgrave rounded off a good season for him with 107.

Yachting
Our sailors contested the Central North Island Team Racing Championships and won over Lindisfarne College. That result seeds the team in the Gold Fleet at Nationals to be held in the coming holidays.

Waka Ama
TBC had a contingent of 20 paddlers head over to Rotorua for this year’s national competitions where there were 91 schools and around 1500 competitors. There were no major prizes but our boys came away feeling they represented themselves & their school well.

Road Cycling
A growing number of students are regularly training on the road which was reflected in the results at the recent Waikato/BOP champs held at Taupo. Theo Wright won the Under 15 30 km race while Cullen Browne was 4th in the Under 16 60 km event.

Rugby 7s
Our Under 15 Sevens team competed at Nationals during tournament week and after winning 4 out of 5 pool games were contesting the top 8 positions. In the play-offs they lost to Gisborne & Hamilton Boys’ High Schools which left our final placing at 7th.

Surf Lifesaving
TBC had 12 students competing in the national Surf lifesaving championships held at the Mount Main Beach last month. A range of medals were won but the following all won gold in various events – Perry Farrell, Hadyn Reardon, Kane Sefton, Matt Hyde, Isaac Marshall, James Puchner & Dylan Williams.

Surfing
Mac Christie has been chosen to represent New Zealand in the Under 18 Boys’ team at the 2013 ISA World Surfing Champions to take place in Nicaragua in June. He won his first ever victory at national level in the Under 18 Boys Division at the Backdoor Grombash last weekend. Jordan Griffin is a non-travelling reserve for the same team.

Swimming
The 16 strong TBC team dominated the recent BOP Champs winning the 4x50m. freestyle relay in each of the 3 age groups & also coming 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the 3 age groups of the 50m. Medley relays. There were also 17 other individual medals.

Athletics
TBC won 2 titles at the North Island Secondary Schools championships with Ollie Ranby winning the Senior Boys 200m & Daniel Hintz the Intermediate 1500m.

Rugby
The 1st XV season has begun in promising fashion with a huge 99-6 win over Whangarei BHS in Whangarei ( 15 tries) followed by a 29 all draw against last year’s Auckland champions Sacred Heart. They had played 6 other games previously and were unbeaten including a comfortable win over our regular nemesis Rotorua BHS.
The team travelled to play Massey HS in Auckland and came away with a hard fought 22-13 win. The 2nd XV won their game also. Perhaps this is going to be our year…………
