If there is anyone keen on being co-opted onto the committee we are keen to have a couple of new members. This involves about 8 meetings through the year, usually held at TBC so please let me know if you are interested.
TBC Staff
Old Boy Peter Stevens has been welcomed back onto the staff in 2014. Previously Head of the Science Department at TBC Peter has just returned from more than a decade teaching in international schools in Singapore and Indonesia.
Other Old Boys on the staff at the present time are Brian Ebbett, Mike Verschaffelt, Hans Meys, Chris Lee, Andrew Ferguson, Rob Sperling, Aramahou Ririnui, Wayne Merritt, Andy Turner, Shay Hulsebosch, Logan Gemming, Steve Kelly, Brad Smith, Barry Parkinson, Nathan Fry, Charles Williams, Harlie Deacon, Hamish Boyce and Tim Clarke – 20 in total.

2013 Scholarship Results
TBC results were again the envy of all other schools in the Bay of Plenty with a total of 42 scholarships awarded of which 4 were outstanding. Twenty six students across 12 different subjects gained this esteemed award with 2013 dux Todd Harris picking up 4 (outstanding in statistics) as did Jamie Taylor. Individual subjects with most awards were statistics with 11 and geography with 7. Ten of the scholarships awarded were gained by Year 12 students.
NCEA Results
These results have tracked upwards in recent times and the 2013 cohort again performed well. Their achievements have been recognised in recent Assemblies.
Super 8 Scholar Awards (awarded in the 8 Super 8 schools) are given for achieving Excellence Endorsement for their year ie. more than 50 credits at that level . There were 17 of last year's Year 12 students who achieved this at either Level 2 or Level 3.
There were 1084 individual subject endorsements, for which you must achieve at least 14 credits at merit or excellence level, with these awarded to 495 students across the 3 Levels.
Principal Robert Mangan has also introduced a Centurion Award at our school which goes to all students in the senior school who pass ALL of their credits in a calendar year. In Year 13 this year there are 23 students who did not miss a credit in 2013 of whom 9 have passed every single assessment in their time at TBC!
Sub-Antarctic Islands
Year 13 student Ben Richards has had the opportunity to visit New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic islands as part of the 2014 Young Blake Expedition. The select group of students head south on a NZ Navy vessel and during their trip hear some of NZ’s most prominent scientists, participate in onboard activity including media training & navy led activity and then accompany terrestrial ecologists assessing flora & fauna on the likes of the Auckland Islands.
Old Boys Academics
Daniel Bridgwater finished at TBC last year with Excellence Endorsement in all 3 NCEA levels and a scholarship in statistics. He has been a champion rower throughout his time at school and has now beenaccepted into Harvard beginning in December. He follows his older brothers to an American ivy league university as they are studying at Yale.
Former student Zach McLean, who is working on his B.Sc Honours at Waikato University, has been awarded a $5,000 Patrick Shannon scholarship from the Livestock Improvement Corporation. The funds will assist his research in reproductive technology speeding up the breeding process with elite genetic material from prize cows.

Golf
Charlie Hillier and Tyler King have both been selected as part of the 4 man NZ Under 19 team to contest upcoming amateur events in Australia.
The TBC team returned from the annual Super 8 competition having secured second place althoughHarry Hillier was the best performed golfer in the whole competition.
Athletics
Our annual athletic sports were held on the artificial track at the Domain closely followed by the BOP Championships. As is usual TBC athletes dominated proceedings at this event with placings in most boys events. Most significant performers were Peni Lasaqa who won the sprint double as well as the long jump in the junior division. At intermediate level Ethan Holman completed the sprint doublewhile in the senior boys Ryan Carroll made it a trifecta while adding the triple jump as well. Daniel Hintz took out the senior 800 m./1500 m. double while TBC teams won the 4X 100m. Relay in all 3 divisions.
Cricket
A young 1st XI has performed well through the season but perhaps one of the most meritorious performances was a loss in which the team faced international strike bowler Trent Boult on Nicholson Field. A gap in the international and first class schedule meant Trent turned out for his Cadets club side and ended with 2 wickets after his spell after the match was reduced to 40 overs because of the weather. Older brother Jono who has been a regular with Northern Districts this season completed the victory scoring 74 not out.
NZCT Cup junior cricket side played the Northern Districts final against Hamilton BHS last week and emerged victorious in a 1 run win thriller. TBC batted first and made 131 for 9 in their 40 overs. The visitors seemed on track with 98 for 5 with 7 overs remaining however as the pressure increased panic ensued and with 3 run outs Hamilton’s innings was ended on 130 meaning TBC will contest these finals against the other 5 regional winners from around the country next week.
Lawn Bowls
Talor Duncan is part of the New Zealand Under 18 team currently contesting a trans-Tasman series in Australia.
Old Boys Sport
Football
Tyler Boyd, who is enjoying his higher profile with the Phoenix in 2014, made his All Whites debut in the match against World Cup bound Japan.
Ryan Thomas, who is playing club football with Dutch Eredivise side PEC Zwolle also debuted in the same match.
Mikey Kramer – NZ Under 17 representative in Colombia some years ago – is currently trialling with the Carolina RailHawks who play in the second tier of the American soccer league.
Cricket
There are 4 Old Boys who have played first class cricket for Northern Districts this season.Daniel Flynn captained the side (5000+ runs @ 37.54 HS 241) with Kane Williamson playing when NZ duties allowed (5000+ runs @ 49.51HS 284*). Joe Carter (44.93 Ave. HS 44.93) & Bharat Popli (35.57 Ave HS 82) have both established themselves in the group this season with solid performances with Joe distinguishing himself with the top score ever by a Bay of Plenty batsman when hescored 215 against Poverty Bay in a Fergus Hickey match.
Kayaking
Callum Gibb, who recently left school, beat some of the world’s top-ranked paddlers in taking out the Oceania under 18 K1 event at the Olympic course in Sydney. His times placed him 2nd in the under 23 division so this was a superb effort. TBC’s Jack Dangen was the top under 16 paddler. Ben Gibb won the Oceania C1 title at the same meet.
Rugby
The 2014 Super 15 is underway and there are 5 Old Boys involved. Tanerau Latimer has just completed his 100th game in Super rugby with the vast majority of these games for the Chiefs where he is joined by Nathan Harris and Sam Kane.Jared Hoeata continues his association with the Highlanders while Luke Braid is Blues captain again this season.
Coast to Coast
Dan Matuschka competed in the Coast to Coast for the first time and performed very well placing 8th in the open men’s division. This was in the 2 day event.
Hockey
After 6 months out of the game with injury, Andy Hayward returned to the Blacksticks for their 3 match series against Japan in Tauranga. After a 2 all draw in the first match the second was won 2-0 with Hayward contributing to that score-line with one of his trademark drag flicks. The 2-0 series victory was achieved with a comprehensive 5-1 win in the last match.
Old Boys Arts
Eryn Wilson, who was heavily involved in Drama while at TBC, has forged a career in the industry since leaving school with his latest work being a film project. Inspired by the story of an Australian rehabilitating dogs he has set out to tell the tale on film. Check out the following https://www.facebook.com/k9dogdoco
New TV New Zealand show Step Dave features Old Boy Rawiri Jobe as Azza. It screens on TV2 on Tuesday nights from 8.30 p.m.
The Underwater Collective (featuring Old Boy Glen Leslie + Jared Benfell & Ali Selliman) have had their first exhibition in Hamilton for several years. Work not sold there will feature at Zeus Gallery (which was Harrison’s on 11th Avenue) in the near future where another Old Boy painter Elliot Mason is the director.
Recent Old Boy Blair Shepherd has been hitting the airwaves in Dunedin. Catch him on the student radioRadioOne91FM on Mondays from 2- 4 p.m.
Adam Jenkins has had a very successful career in advertising since his time at TBC in the early 90s. After studying politics in Wellington he worked for the film production company Silverscreen which led to jobs in Sydney, London & New York. He has worked in NY for many years now including creating the backdrop for U2’s appearance at the British Music Awards. Recent advertising awards include Epica Gold 2011, Clio Awards bronze 2012 & Gold Lion at Cannes 2012.
