The shortest day has been and gone and it won't be long now before Winter Tournament week. This edition features many impressive performances through the second term, which ends this week.

Events
Auckland Function
Auckland-based TBC Old Boys have their annual function at The Bluestone Room, just off lower Queen Street on Durham Lane from 5.30 pm on Friday, July 18th. A great atmosphere in the oldest commercial building in the city (1850s), with the Old Boys supplying the first drink and nibbles. Bring along your old school mates.
Annual Dinner
This year's dinner promises to be the biggest and best yet. We recognise renowned artist and Old Boy Nigel Brown, who is recognised as one of New Zealand's most important and acclaimed painters. The dinner is being held on Friday the 19th of September. Tickets for members are $65pp, with a discount for a table of 10. School Production
The annual TBC/TGC production, which this year is “Thoroughly Modern Millie” ,plays in the GYYT at TBC and we have 30 tickets put aside for the Friday night show on July 25th. Staff News
Long serving member of the Maths Department Gary Maurice retired in June after a 40 year teaching career, with 25+ years of that being at TBC. He was presented with a scholars tie at a special assembly in recognition of the 40 students he helped attain calculus scholarship through the years.
An even longer serving staff member in George ter Wal will finish up at the end of the year having completed 35 years on the staff.
TBC Sport
Cross country
In the Super 8 our overall placing was 6th but the future looks rosy for our team as the Year 9 team swept all-comers. Lachlan Haycock took out first place, but then TBC dominated to win both the 3 and 6 man races with all six boys finishing in the top 10 individual places.
At Nationals the youngsters were again the stars as we won gold in the 6 man team and bronze in the 3 man team events.
Water Polo
Sean McKenzie has been selected in the New Zealand Under 16 team that will compete against Australia next month.
Football
The 1st XI has made a good start in qualifying matches for the NZSS Tournament with victories over Cambridge HS (4-0), Rotorua BHS (3-1), St Peters Cambridge (2-0) & St John’s Hamilton (6-2).
Squash
TBC dominated the recent Bay of Plenty secondary schools squash championships taking all top 4 places, with 9 students in the top 15 places. Josh Oakley took out the title from Alex Revington.
Rotorua BHS Junior Exchange
TBC dominated this exchange with the 67 all draw in basketball the only partial success enjoyed by the visitors. In rugby both our under 15 (48-7) & under 14 ( 58-15) sides won comfortably while the junior football ((7-0) & hockey (3-2) were also victorious.
Rugby
The 1st XV did very well to make the Chiefs Cup final where they were beaten by Rotorua BHS. The following weekend it was the first match of the Super 8 and in a rematch, this time in Tauranga, the result was a 20 all draw. This past weekend New Plymouth BHS were the visitors and TBC won all 4 fixtures – 1st XV (41-17), 2nd XV, under 15 & under 14.
TBC Arts/Academic
University Success
The last university philosophy class at TBC taught by George ter Wal has just had their results from Waikato University. Top performers were Adam Scott & Minchang Kim who both got A+ with 89% and there were 9 others who got B+ or better.
Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
Twelve students headed to Wellington for the national finals of this competition, where they performed with distinction. Peter Burman won an award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.
Super 8 Cultural Festival
A large contingent of students had a very successful time of it in Napier. TBC were placed in most categories with 1st placings achieved in Senior & Junior Oratory, Senior Debating, Senior Theatre Sports, Group Music & Junior Solo Music. Best Actor awards went to Brad Hemmingway and Peter Burman.
Dance

Old Boys
Drama
2012 Old Boy of the Year Ian Mune continues to make a mark in the arts, as he directs Maurice Shadbolt’s Once on Chunuk Bair at the Maidment Theatre in Auckland, which plays until July 5th. Ian directed the play’s debut season in 1982 & its last professional production in 1989.
He is also exhibiting his acting skills in the second season of the New Zealand TV programme Agent Anna.
Politics
Todd Muller has just been selected as the National Party candidate for the Western Bay of Plenty electorate, which has been held with a significant majority by retiring MP Tony Ryall. It looks likely Todd will follow Tuariki (John) Delamere to Wellington as TBC’s second MP. He and party leader John Key have both visited the school in recent weeks, with the Prime Minister particularly interested in the traditional ,and usually very accurate, TBC election poll. Results for 2014 gave National 39% with a surprising second place being Mana/Internet with 23%.
Music
Former Midnight Youth frontman Jeremy Redmore has just released the second single from his new album, which is available on presale ahead of release on July 25th. Old Boys Sports
Football
TBC has been represented in the All Whites for a long time by Tony Lochhead,but in the team of 2014 there are 2 Old Boys. The side drew 0-0 with South Africa in Auckland recently, with youngsters Tyler Boyd (Phoenix) & Ryan Thomas (PEC Zwolle) to the fore.
After being the first Phoenix player to play 50 matches and finally tallying 131 Tony has nabbed a contract with Chivas USA in the NASL.
Hockey
Andy Hayward was leading goal-scorer for the Blacksticks when they took out seventh place at the World Cup in the Netherlands. Hayward scored 2 hat tricks, with the highlight of the tournament being a 1 all draw with the Dutch in front of 15,000 screaming locals.
Athletics
2012 Sports Captain Julian Oakley, who is on an athletics scholarship to Providence College in Rhode Island in the United States, became the latest New Zealander to run a mile in under 4 minutes with a 3:58:89 time in placing 3rd at a track race in Massachucetts, where he beat Olympic silver medallist Leo Manzano.
Cricket
Kane Williamson’s 6th test century of 113 set the foundation for the Black Caps second ever test win in the West Indies, and in his only over of the match he took the last wicket for the Kiwis to claim victory inside of 4 days. Kane’s test batting average is now over 40 and there is only one batsman in the world in the top 10 century makers who has scored as many 100s before his 24th birthday – one Sachin Tendulkar!
Kane has now scored his 7th century & highest test score of 161*. This gained him the man of the series award as well as placing him 7th on the test run scoring list for the 2014 calendar year.
Kayaking
Mike Dawson was satisfied with his 15th placing at his first World Cup meet of the season on the Olympic course at Lee Valley in England. Mike had not competed since the Australian Open at the start of the year and has been recovering from a wrist surgery.
Golf
Omokoroa based professional Kieren Muir has had his best finish on the NZ Charles Tour, finishing second to Ryan Fox at the Muriwai Open.
Charlie Hillier, who led our golf team in 2013, is now into three months of playing in the USA, which will include the US Amateur Championships next month, which was won in 2008 by Danny Lee.
Jared Pender has just scored every golfers dream with a sub-60 round of 59 onhis home course of Tauranga.
Rugby
Nathan Harris has backed up an impressive season with the Chiefs to be named in the All Blacks training squad for the tour of the England.
The Steamers have been named for the 2014 ITM Cup season and there is one of last years 1st XI named in the squad in Daniel Hollinshead. Old Boys Te Aihe Toma , Sam Kane, Carl Axtens and Nathan Harris are all included as well.
Surfing
Matt Hewitt has just left these shores again looking to break into the world’s top 100 surfers. He is heading off to compete on the ASP World Qualifying Series in Mexico and success there could boost his current international ranking of 155 into the elite competitions.
Rowing
After a significant break from his sport Mahe Drysdale was back to his best at the World Cup event in France, where he won gold in the single sculls. He has been joined by fellow Old Boy Adam Ling in 2014 who will contest the lightweight double scull.
